Xanthan gum is a widely used polysaccharide produced through the fermentation of sugars by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. Since its commercial introduction in the 1960s, it has become an essential ingredient across food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial formulations due to its ability to stabilize, thicken, and improve texture even at very low concentrations.

Its compatibility with plant-based and allergen-free recipes has also made it attractive in alternative protein and dairy-free applications.

Use in Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care

Beyond food, xanthan gum is widely applied in pharmaceutical syrups, suspensions, and topical formulations, where it functions as a stabilizer and viscosity modifier. In personal care and cosmetics, it is found in toothpaste, lotions, creams, and shampoos, improving texture, spreadability, and shelf stability.

Its biocompatibility and non-toxic nature make it suitable for products intended for sensitive skin and medical use, further supporting its integration into health-related formulations.

Industrial Applications

Xanthan gum plays a significant role in industrial processes as well, particularly in oil and gas operations, where it is used as a rheology modifier in drilling fluids. Its ability to maintain viscosity under extreme temperature and pressure conditions helps transport drilling cuttings to the surface efficiently and improves fluid stability.

In agriculture, it is sometimes used in formulations of fertilizers and pesticides to improve spray performance and reduce runoff, enhancing application efficiency.
